CCTV Drain Surveys

See inside the drain — blockages, breaks and exactly where the pipe runs

CCTV drain survey camera inspecting an underground pipe

Know What’s Wrong With The Drain, And Exactly Where

A CCTV drain survey puts a camera inside the pipe so you can see the problem rather than dig for it. A sonde-equipped drain camera runs the line sending back live video, while a locator above ground tracks the camera head — so you get the fault and its exact position and depth, not just footage.

Utility Works runs drain cameras as part of our detection and mapping work across Auckland, Franklin and North Waikato. And because we also own the hydro-vac and diggers, the crew that finds the blockage or break is the crew that can clear or repair it — no second call-out, no handover.

How it works

How a CCTV drain survey works

  1. Camera goes down the line

A waterproof drain camera runs through the drain or pipe, sending live video back as it travels.

  2. We trace it from the surface

A sonde in the camera head is picked up with a locator above ground, pinning every fault to a position and depth you can mark.

  3. You get the findings

Blockages, cracks, root intrusion, collapses and bad falls recorded with the location of each — and a plan to clear or repair it.

Typical uses

  • Blocked or slow drains

Find what’s actually causing it — roots, a collapse, a crushed section or a build-up — instead of clearing blind and hoping.

  • Locating an unknown drain

Trace where a stormwater or sewer line really runs, and how deep, before you build over it, connect to it or dig near it.

  • Checking a drain before you buy or build

A recorded run through the existing drainage on a property or site, so you know its condition before you commit.

  • Proving a drain fault

Camera evidence of a break, blockage or collapse for an insurer, the council or a body corporate.

Drain Camera Work With A Crew That Can Fix It

The difference with us is what happens after the survey — we locate, we dig and we repair, so a fault on the screen doesn’t mean finding another contractor.

Condition surveys of existing drainage

A recorded run through the stormwater and sewer lines on a site, so you know what you’re inheriting before work starts.

Location and depth, not just footage

Every fault tied to a position and a depth with the camera’s sonde, so excavation goes straight to it.

Blockage and fault diagnosis

Roots, collapses, crushed pipe, displaced joints and poor falls identified and pinned to a spot on the surface.

Survey, then repair — one team

We run our own locators, hydro-vac and diggers, so the crew that finds the fault can expose and repair it without a second contractor.

FAQ'S

What is a CCTV drain survey?
A CCTV drain survey runs a waterproof camera through a drain or pipe so its condition can be seen from the inside — blockages, cracks, root intrusion, collapses and poor falls — on a live video feed. A sonde in the camera head lets us trace its position and depth from the surface, so every fault is pinned to a spot you can mark and dig to.
Can you find exactly where a blockage or break is?
Yes. The camera shows the fault and the sonde tells us precisely where it is and how deep, so there’s no guessing and no digging up the whole line. We mark the position on the surface ready for excavation.
Do you repair the drain as well, or only inspect it?
Both. Unlike a camera-only operator, Utility Works runs its own locating gear, hydro-vac trucks and diggers, so the crew that surveys the drain can expose and repair the fault. One team, no handover.
Can you locate an unmarked stormwater or sewer drain?
Yes. Pushing the sonde-equipped camera along the line and tracing it from above ground maps where a drain actually runs and how deep — useful before you build over it, connect to it or dig nearby.
Where do you do CCTV drain surveys?
