How to Find an Underground Water Leak in NZ: Signs, the Meter Test and Who to Call

Most underground water leaks start small and stay out of sight. By the time water shows at the surface it may have been running for weeks, and every litre has gone through your meter. This guide covers the signs we see most often across Auckland, Franklin and the Waikato, how to run the meter test that confirms a leak, how to work out which side of the meter it is on, and who to call for each situation.

Who Owns the Pipe From the Street to Your House? Point of Supply, Responsibility and Leak Remissions in NZ

Who Owns the Pipe From the Street to Your House? Point of Supply, Responsibility and Leak Remissions in NZ

When water starts pooling in the berm or the bill doubles, the first question is who has to fix it. The answer depends on which side of the point of supply the problem sits, and that line is drawn in a slightly different place on urban, rural, cross-lease and unit-title properties. This guide explains where it is, what the water supplier will and will not do, how shared pipes and tenancies work, and how to claim back some of the water a leak cost you.

Water Main Replacement Cost in NZ: Repair, Renewal or Replace?

When a water main or lateral starts leaking, the first instinct is to patch it. Sometimes that is right. Often it is the first of several patches that together cost more than a new pipe would have. This guide sets out what repair, renewal and replacement each involve, what decides the cost of each in New Zealand, how to tell which one your pipe needs, and the pipe materials around Auckland and the Waikato that are past their time, with examples from our own jobs.

Water — FAQ'S

Who’s responsible for the pipe from the street to my house?
In most NZ supply areas the public main and the meter or toby at the boundary belong to the water supplier, and the private lateral from there to the house is the owner’s. Check with your supplier — and if the leak is on your side, we find and fix it.
Can you find a leak without digging up the driveway?
Almost always. Acoustic correlators and ground microphones locate the leak from the surface, so we open the ground only where it actually is — one small hole rather than a trench.
Do you work with bores and tanks as well as town supply?
Yes. Properties off the mains get the same treatment: main laid from the bore or tank, pump connected, pressure balanced and the run mapped.
