From the boundary to the building — installed, tested, reinstated

What it is
The water main is the pipe that carries water from the street meter (or your bore or tank) to the building. We lay new ones for builds and subdivisions, and replace old galvanised or asbestos-cement mains that keep failing.
When you need it
- A new house, minor dwelling or lot needs water from the street.
- An old main has leaked more than once and keeps getting patched.
- Pressure has dropped since an extension or second bathroom went in.
What you get
- A new main laid, connected, pressure-tested and flushed.
- Toby, valves and meter box fitted and working at the boundary.
- Trench backfilled, surface reinstated and the route mapped for the future.

Water Mains Installation and Replacement Backed by Insight & Experience
Utility Works installs water mains for residential, commercial, and rural sites — ranging from renewals and new connections to complete reticulation systems.
Every site has its own set of underground challenges — from locating unknown junctions and building inlets to avoiding and protecting existing services like power, comms, gas, and drainage.
Our tailored approach ensures each installation is planned precisely, delivered efficiently, and finished to a high standard — with no guesswork.
How it works
How a water mains job runs
Scope and quote
We look at the property, the existing supply and what’s failing, then quote in writing — no obligation.
Locate what’s there
Power, gas, comms and drainage traced and marked before a trench is opened, so nothing else gets hit.
Trench or drill, lay, connect
The route trenched or directionally drilled (hydro-vac near anything sensitive), the new main laid, valves and meter fitted.
Test and reinstate
Pressure-tested, chlorinated and connected; concrete, driveway or lawn put back as it was.
What’s included
What a water mains job includes
New connections & reticulation
From a single dwelling to a full subdivision — mains, branches and lot connections laid, tested and signed off, working with councils, developers and project managers.
Replacement & renewal
Failed galvanised or asbestos-cement mains removed and replaced along the existing route; upsized where pressure can’t keep up.
Bore, tank & pump supplies
Properties off the town network: main laid from the bore or tank, pump connected, pressure balanced.
Valves, tobies & meter boxes
Isolation valves, tobies and meter boxes fitted and tested with every new or replaced main.

New mains flushed, chlorinated and pressure-tested, with the paperwork councils and project specs require.
Reinstatement
Concrete, asphalt, lawn or paving put back as it was — the job isn’t finished until the surface is.

Water mains installation and replacement in South Auckland
We are based at Waiau Pa, so South Auckland is home ground: Papakura, Drury, Pukekohe, Waiuku and the rest of Franklin, across to Manukau and East Tāmaki, and over the river to Tuakau, Pōkeno, Mercer, Meremere and Te Kauwhata. These are the six situations that most often mean a main needs installing or replacing rather than patching again.
Leaks that keep coming back
One repair on an old galvanised or asbestos-cement main is usually followed by another a few metres along. When the pipe is at the end of its life, replacing the run costs less than the third or fourth dig.
Pressure that has dropped
Galvanised pipe rusts from the inside and chokes the flow. If the shower fades when a tap runs, or the far trough barely fills, the main is undersized or furred up.
Brown or rusty water
Discoloured water after the supply has been off, or first thing in the morning, points to the main itself corroding rather than a fitting.
An extension or second dwelling
A minor dwelling, a second bathroom or a shed with a kitchen can push an old small-bore main past what it can deliver. Upsizing the main is the fix, not a bigger pump.
A new build with no supply yet
New sections, subdivision lots and rural builds need a main from the point of supply to the house, tested and signed off before the plumber connects it.
A bore, tank or pump that cannot keep up
Off the town network, the main from the bore or tank is often the weak link. We re-lay it at the right size and balance the pump so pressure holds at the far end.
Water mains for every kind of South Auckland property
Commercial, residential, farming or a subdivision: the trench, the pipe and the testing are the same job done properly. What changes is how we work around the site.
Commercial
Offices, retail centres, schools, early childhood centres and industrial sites need a supply that does not stop trading when it fails. We install and replace mains, fire and sprinkler feeds and site reticulation, working around opening hours and site traffic.
Residential
From a replacement main in Papakura to a new connection on a Drury section, we bring water from the boundary to the house, reconnect the same day and put the driveway or lawn back as it was.
Farms and lifestyle blocks
Bore and tank mains, trough lines and reticulation across paddocks around Pukekohe, Waiuku and the upper Waikato, with long runs sized so the last trough still fills.
Developers and subdivisions
Reticulation, lot connections and as-built mapping for subdivisions from Drury to Pōkeno, with the chlorination, pressure test and paperwork Watercare and Waikato District Council want before sign-off.

What a water main replacement costs in South Auckland
There is no fixed price for a water main because no two runs are the same. The cost comes down to the length from the boundary to the building, what is on top of it (lawn is quick, a concrete driveway is not), whether we can trench or need to directionally drill, the pipe size, and whether a toby, meter box or pump is part of the job.
Call 0800 779 588 and we will look at the property, talk through the options and quote in writing. No obligation, and the quote covers the whole job including reinstatement.

Auckland Residential Water Mains Replacement
After the aged water mains at a residential property in South Auckland had many failures, Utility Works was contracted to renew the system. The project involved services detection, concrete cutting, and hydro-vac trenching to minimise risk and damage to other services in the work zone. The new water mains were installed with a new inlet valve, toby, and relayed concrete, and the property reinstated to its original condition.

Retirement Village Water Leak Detection & Repair
A large retirement village of 58 units in South Auckland had been experiencing underground water loss. Utility Works conducted system loss testing, system mapping, mark-out and CCTV/sonde pinpointing of joint and tapping band positions, isolation point installation, followed by acoustic and infrared detection works. Once leak positions were located, we implemented strategic excavation and pipe repairs, followed by ground reinstatement and site clean-up. This successful project resulted in the accurate locating and repair of five leak positions, and provided substantial water savings to the client.

Water Main Replacement Cost in NZ: Repair, Renewal or Replace?
When a water main or lateral starts leaking, the first instinct is to patch it. Sometimes that is right. Often it is the first of several patches that together cost more than a new pipe would have. This guide sets out what repair, renewal and replacement each involve, what decides the cost of each in New Zealand, how to tell which one your pipe needs, and the pipe materials around Auckland and the Waikato that are past their time, with examples from our own jobs.

Who Owns the Pipe From the Street to Your House? Point of Supply, Responsibility and Leak Remissions in NZ
When water starts pooling in the berm or the bill doubles, the first question is who has to fix it. The answer depends on which side of the point of supply the problem sits, and that line is drawn in a slightly different place on urban, rural, cross-lease and unit-title properties. This guide explains where it is, what the water supplier will and will not do, how shared pipes and tenancies work, and how to claim back some of the water a leak cost you.
