Valve, Fire Hydrant & Water Meter Replacement

Keeping private water networks controllable across Auckland, Franklin and North Waikato

Since 2015Own locators, hydro-vac & diggersAuckland · Franklin · North Waikato

What it is

The fittings on a water network — the toby at the boundary, isolation valves along the main, fire hydrants and meter boxes — wear out like anything else. We dig them up, replace them and reinstate the ground, without replacing the whole main.

When you need it

  • The toby will not turn, or turns without stopping the water.
  • A private hydrant is seized, leaking or failed its flow test.
  • A multi-unit site needs sub-meters so each tenancy can be read separately.

What you get

  • The failed fitting replaced and tested, with the shut-off working again.
  • Hydrant flow and pressure results recorded where tested.
  • Excavation backfilled and the surface and box reinstated.

Valves, Hydrants and Meters That Work When You Need Them

A water network is only as manageable as its fittings. A seized isolation valve turns a small repair into a whole-site shutdown. A weeping toby wastes water for years without anyone noticing. A hydrant that has not been flow tested is a liability on the day it is needed. Utility Works replaces and installs the valves, fire hydrants, backflow devices and water meter boxes that let owners of private networks across Auckland, Franklin and North Waikato isolate, measure and protect their supply.

This work rarely stands alone. It usually follows a water network survey that has flagged failed fittings, or an underground leak detection job where the leak turned out to be the valve itself. Where the pipe around the fitting has reached the end of its life, we move into water mains replacement. One crew, from diagnosis to reinstatement.

What’s included

What a fittings job covers

  • Isolation Valve Replacement

Seized, weeping or passing isolation valves mean you cannot shut down a section of your network when you need to. We replace gate, butterfly and ball valves on private mains, with the tapping, excavation and reinstatement done by our own crew.

  • Toby & Boundary Valve Replacement

A toby that will not turn, or turns without stopping the flow, leaves a property with no way to isolate. We dig, replace and re-box tobies at the boundary so the shut-off works when a plumber or tenant needs it.

  • Fire Hydrant Replacement

Private hydrants on commercial, industrial and retirement sites corrode, seize and leak like any other fitting. We replace hydrant risers, valves and surface boxes and get the hydrant back to full working order.

  • Hydrant Flow & Pressure Testing

We flow and pressure test hydrants to confirm what the network can actually deliver, record the results, and flag hydrants that fall short so they can be addressed before they are relied on.

  • Backflow Prevention Devices

Where a private network connects to the public supply, a backflow preventer protects the mains from contamination. We install and replace reduced-pressure and double-check devices and the valve chambers that house them.

  • Water Meter Box Installs

We install new meter boxes and sub-meters for multi-unit developments, body corporates, commercial tenancies and rural sites, so every connection can be read, billed and leak-tested on its own.

FAQ'S

How do I know if an isolation valve needs replacing?
The usual signs are a valve that will not turn, one that turns freely but does not stop the flow, water weeping from the spindle or gland, or a valve box that is constantly wet. If you cannot isolate a section of your network to carry out a repair, the valve has already failed in the way that matters. We can test and confirm before recommending replacement.
Who is responsible for the toby and water meter at my property?
In most of Auckland and Waikato the network operator owns the meter itself and the fittings on the public side of it, while the property owner is responsible for the pipework and valves on the private side of the boundary. Private sites such as retirement villages, schools, industrial yards and multi-unit developments typically own all the valves, hydrants and sub-meters inside the property. We work on the private side and can advise where that line sits for your site.
Do you test fire hydrants or only replace them?
Both. We carry out hydrant flow and pressure testing on private networks to confirm available flow, record the results for your compliance file, and identify hydrants that are seized, leaking or underperforming. Where a hydrant fails, we replace the riser, valve and surface box and re-test.
Can you install separate water meters for each unit in a development?
Yes. Sub-metering each unit, tenancy or building lets owners bill fairly and makes leak detection far simpler, because a loss shows up on one meter rather than being spread across the whole site. We install the meter boxes, isolation valves and any backflow devices required, and can map the finished layout for your records.
What happens if the valve is buried or not where the plans say?
This is common on older sites. Our locating crew traces the main with electromagnetic and acoustic equipment and pinpoints the valve or toby before we excavate, often confirming with a hydro-vac pothole. It means one hole, in the right place, rather than a trench along the whole berm looking for it.
