Why Plumbers Call Utility Works: Locating and Digging for the Trades

A good share of our work comes from other trades. Plumbers, electricians, drainlayers and builders call us when their job hits the ground and they need services located, exposed or a leak pinpointed without pulling their own crew off the tools. Here is how that works.

Why Plumbers Call Utility Works: Locating and Digging for the Trades

If you run a trade business you know the problem. Your plumber is on site to replace a lateral, but nobody knows where the power cable crosses it. Your electrician needs a trench to the new shed but the client has a vague memory of a water line somewhere in that paddock. Your builder has a slab leak on a renovation and the client wants it found before the floor goes down. None of these are your core job, all of them hold your core job up, and getting them wrong is expensive.

Utility Works exists to take that piece off your plate. We locate, pothole, trench and pinpoint leaks for the trades across Auckland, Franklin and North Waikato, so your crew turns up to a site that is ready.

One team with locators, hydro-vac and diggers

The reason trades keep calling us is that we are not just one of those things. Many operators do service locating but cannot dig. Others run diggers but cannot locate. Hydro-vac is often a separate hire again. We run all three with our own staff and our own gear, which means:

  • The person who marked the services is on site when they are exposed, so there is no argument about where the paint went.
  • We can switch between methods as the ground dictates. Locate, hydro-vac to verify, then dig with confidence.
  • You deal with one company and one invoice rather than coordinating three subcontractors around your own programme.
  • If something unexpected turns up, we adjust on the spot instead of calling it a day and rebooking.

What we take on for trades

The jobs we are most often subcontracted for are:

  • Service locating. Marking out power, water, gas, comms and drainage before you dig, using electromagnetic locating and ground penetrating radar. See our underground service detection and mapping page for the detail.
  • Potholing. Exposing a service to confirm its exact position and depth using hydro-vac excavation, so you know rather than hope.
  • Trenching and excavation. Opening the ground for your new lateral, cable or drain, with the spoil managed and the services already proven.
  • Leak pinpointing. Finding the exact spot on a buried or under-slab line so your plumber opens one hole, not five.
  • Reinstatement. Backfilling, compacting and making good so your client is not left with a mess after your part is done.

How a typical subcontract job runs

Most jobs follow the same pattern:

  • You call or message us with the basics. Address, what you are doing, what you need from us and when. If you have a site plan or service plans, send them through.
  • We scope it. For straightforward work we can often quote from the plans and a phone call. For larger or more complex sites we will visit first.
  • We book around your programme. Our aim is to be in and out before your crew is due, or to work alongside them if the job needs it.
  • On site, we locate first. Services are marked and, where needed, potholed to confirm depth and alignment. You get a clear picture of what is in the ground.
  • Then we dig or pinpoint. Trenches go in where you need them, or the leak is marked to a small area ready for your repair.
  • We hand over. Photos, measurements and anything unusual we found. If you want it, we reinstate once your work is finished.

You can keep as much or as little of the job as you want. Some plumbers have us locate and dig and then do the pipe work themselves. Others hand us the whole repair and move on to the next job. Both work.

What to send us

The more we know before we arrive, the faster the job goes. Useful things to send:

  • Site plans or a marked-up aerial showing where you want to dig.
  • Service plans from the asset owners. If you have not pulled these yet, let us know and we can talk you through what is needed.
  • Any as-built drawings or drainage plans the client has.
  • What you already know or suspect is in the ground, including anything private that will not be on any plan, such as irrigation, bore lines or old cables.
  • Your timeframe and any constraints, such as access hours, a tenant on site or a slab pour booked for Friday.

Even a photo of the site with a line drawn on it helps. We are not fussy about format.

Why it pays for your business

Striking a service is the obvious cost, but the quieter cost is time. A crew standing around while someone hunts for a pipe, a job pushed to next week because the digger hire fell through, a client who has lost confidence because the first hole was in the wrong place. Handing the ground work to one specialist team removes most of that. You keep your people on the work you charge for, your programme holds, and the client sees a job that ran smoothly.

If you have a job coming up that involves the ground, call 0800 779 588 and talk to us before you get there. Plenty of trades around South Auckland and the Waikato already do.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you work directly for the client or through us?

Either. Many trades prefer to keep the client relationship and have us invoice them as a subcontractor. Others introduce us to the client and we deal with them directly. Tell us how you would like it set up and we will work that way.

How much notice do you need?

It depends on the job and the time of year. Simple locating and potholing can often be fitted in at short notice. Larger trenching jobs or full leak surveys are best booked a little ahead. Call us as soon as you know the job is coming and we will tell you what is realistic.

Can you locate services if the plans are missing or wrong?

Yes. Plans are a starting point, not the final word. We locate what is actually in the ground using electromagnetic and radar equipment, and we pothole to confirm anything critical. Private services that never appeared on any plan are exactly what we are looking for.
