Underground Service Locating for the North Shore properties, sites and farms
Service locating on the North Shore is about depth as much as position. On the East Coast Bays Formation the pipe follows the ground, so a Watercare lateral that is shallow at the road can be much deeper where a Browns Bay section drops to the house. Albany's 1990s stages and Long Bay carry plastic with and without tracer wire, Devonport's villa streets hide galvanised and cast iron in basalt, and the Northcote rebuild since 2016 has put new mains, cable and stormwater through streets that still carry 1950s services. We trace, sonde, scan where the clay allows, and pothole with the hydro-vac so you dig with a measured depth, not a guess.
Typical underground service locating jobs on the North Shore
- Marking Vector cable, Chorus fibre and Watercare mains before retaining walls on cliff-top sections in Torbay, Long Bay and Greenhithe
- Potholing to measure lateral depth on sloping East Coast Bays sections before drainage and driveway work
- Tracing untraced plastic laterals before renovations on 1990s Albany and Unsworth Heights sections
- Pre-dig locates for townhouse and apartment infill in Northcote, Takapuna and Glenfield
Underground Service Locating, in short
Before anyone digs, we find what is already in the ground: power cables, water and gas pipes, fibre and copper ducts, stormwater and sewer. Electromagnetic locators, tracer equipment, sonde-fitted cameras and ground penetrating radar each pick up what the others cannot, and we mark every service with its depth. Asset owners’ plans from beforeUdig are the starting point; the mark-out shows where things actually are. Where a service must be seen, our hydro-vac truck potholes it without damage, and if the job then needs trenching or a repair the same crew carries on. We can also record what we find with survey-grade GPS for plans and consents.

The North Shore was holiday country until the Harbour Bridge opened in 1959. Devonport and Takapuna were the exceptions, settled around the naval base and Lake Pupuke with Victorian and Edwardian villas and 1920s bungalows. The bridge changed everything else: Glenfield's population went from 5,683 to 13,335 between 1961 and 1966, the East Coast Bays doubled to 12,000 by 1966 and became a city in 1975, and holiday homes in the bays gave way to permanent houses. Albany took the 1990s, and Long Bay and Northcote carry the current build, where Kāinga Ora has been replacing 298 state houses with 479 new ones since 2016.
Underground that reads as four generations of pipe. Under Devonport and Takapuna we find galvanised and lead-era laterals through basalt from the Mount Victoria and Pupuke lava flows. Under Glenfield, Birkdale, Northcote and the bays it is asbestos-cement mains with copper and galvanised laterals from the 1960s. Albany and Unsworth Heights carry polybutylene and early plastic; Long Bay and the Northcote rebuild are PE with tracer wire.
The ground is East Coast Bays Formation sandstone and mudstone from Devonport to Long Bay, weathered to a clay that saturates in winter and slides on cliff-top and gully-head sections. Watercare runs the water and the Rosedale plant, Vector owns the lines and the gas, and Chorus built the fibre. We come over the bridge from Waiau Pa for jobs that justify the hour and group the rest.
When North Shore’s homes were built, and what went in with them
The age of a house tells us what pipe and cable to expect underneath it before we arrive.
Before 1960
Devonport's villas date from the late 1800s, Takapuna had villas on Lake Pupuke from 1863 and became a borough in 1913, and Birkenhead grew around the 1884 sugar works. Until the 1930s most houses in the bays were holiday baches.
1960s to 1980s
After the bridge, Glenfield's small farms were cut into low-cost housing, Birkenhead and Northcote added state houses, the East Coast Bays went from holiday to commuter suburbs, and Torbay built out in the 1970s.
1985 to 2000
Albany's strawberry and dairy farms turned into housing from the late 1980s and it was the Shore's fastest-growing area in the 1990s, with Massey University opening in 1993 and the mall in 1997.
Since 2000
Long Bay's big stages went up in the late 2010s to 933 dwellings by 2023, Northcote's Kāinga Ora rebuild began in 2016, and Hibiscus and Bays added 9.4 percent more dwellings between 2018 and 2023.
What is buried under the North Shore’s sections
The pre-1940 streets of Devonport, Takapuna, Milford and Birkenhead still run galvanised laterals, the oldest off lead-jointed cast iron, through basalt and scoria near the cones and clay elsewhere, so the leak is usually a corroded pinhole and the lateral too far gone to patch. The 1960s subdivisions of Glenfield, Birkdale, Beach Haven, Northcote and the East Coast Bays got asbestos-cement mains with copper or galvanised laterals; the AC cracks at joints under driveways and roots, and the long laterals to houses below street level are where the loss hides.
Albany, Unsworth Heights and 1990s Greenhithe fall in the Dux Quest polybutylene window, so failed fittings inside and untraced alkathene outside are the pattern. Long Bay, the Northcote rebuild and the new apartment blocks in Takapuna and Albany are PE100 and PVC with tracer wire, where the usual fault is a service crushed during landscaping. Metallic pipe we trace directly; plastic without a tracer needs a sonde, an induced signal or a pothole, and on the Shore that covers most of the 1980s and 90s stock.
What North Shore’s clay means for locating
From Devonport to Long Bay the Shore sits on the East Coast Bays Formation: flat-lying sandstone, siltstone and mudstone weathered to a clay and silt residual soil. Devonport, Takapuna and Northcote add the volcanic field: scoria cones at Mount Victoria and North Head, lava along the Devonport waterfront and east from Lake Pupuke, and the breached craters at Onepoto and Tuff Crater, now tidal mud. Engineers studying Shore slopes report that the residual clay saturates and fails as earthflows, weathered rock goes as planar landslides, and groundwater is the main driver.
So on a Browns Bay or Beach Haven section leak water moves through saturated clay and along the bedding rather than rising where it escapes, radar only works for shallow targets because wet clay absorbs the signal, and any hole near a cliff edge or gully head stays small and is backfilled the same day. On Devonport's basalt the problem flips: rock carries pipe noise so well that we correlate between two contact points rather than trust a ground microphone, and digging is slow.
Who owns the cables and pipes on the North Shore
Which network a service belongs to decides who fixes it, who you call first and whose plans a beforeUdig request returns.
Water supply
Watercare supplies the whole Shore. The point of supply is the meter outlet closest to your private pipe, inside or outside the boundary: street main and meter are Watercare's, meter to house is yours. The 1928 Huia plant alone feeds about 300,000 Aucklanders.
Wastewater
Watercare's Rosedale plant treats the Shore's wastewater for almost 220,000 people through an outfall nearly three kilometres out to sea, and from late 2026 also takes north-west Auckland's flow via the Northern Interceptor.
Electricity
Vector owns the lines from Wellsford to Papakura and shows the North Shore as its own network region. The Albany, Long Bay and Northcote stages were trenched with underground cable from the start.
Gas
Vector builds and maintains Auckland's gas network. We locate and mark gas pipes before you dig; anyone smelling gas should call Vector's fault line, not a locator.
Fibre and phone
Chorus built the UFB fibre across Auckland, finished in December 2022, and is retiring its copper with a 2030 target.
beforeUdig plans
A request here typically returns Watercare Services, Vector Electricity, Vector Gas, Vector Fibre, Chorus and Spark. It will not show your private lateral or drains, or depth on a sloping section where the pipe follows the ground.

One crew for the North Shore: find it, dig it, fix it.
Takapuna is about an hour from Waiau Pa over the Harbour Bridge, so a Shore job that justifies the trip — a confirmed leak, a body corporate or a commercial site — carries little extra for travel.

Golf Course Pond Leak Detection in Auckland
Lined ponds pose many challenges once underground loss occurs. Utility Works was contracted to assist with the locating of pond leaks at a large Auckland golf course ahead of the dry summer months, when the irrigation system relied on the water supply. The process involved underwater diving and installation of pipe air bags to block the balance pipe and separate the two ponds, enabling accurate loss calculation, followed by GPR and IR works to determine likely areas of loss. The ponds were pumped out to enable locating of the defects for repair. We also assisted with the irrigation flow and isolation testing during the process.
